The Science

What Light Through Skin Reveals

Your blood is not invisible to light. Red and infrared wavelengths pass through skin and are absorbed differently depending on what the blood is carrying — and that difference is the foundation of wearable blood sensing.

For blood oxygen, the physics is well established: oxygen-rich hemoglobin and oxygen-poor hemoglobin absorb red and infrared light at different rates. A sensor with both red and infrared LEDs reads that ratio and reports SpO2 — a genuine, accurate reading, the same way a hospital finger clip works. Fitaos uses multi-channel PPG for this.

Beyond oxygen, the same optical signal carries subtler metabolic information. Fitaos estimates day-to-day trends for blood glucose, uric acid and blood lipids from how the light scatters and is absorbed in tissue and fluid.
